The Great Marsh is one of the most remarkable natural features in Barnstable Village — a vast, pristine salt marsh ecosystem that stretches along the south shore of Barnstable Harbor. It is one of the largest and most ecologically significant salt marshes in New England, and a defining feature of the Barnstable Village landscape.
The marsh is a haven for wildlife — great blue herons, egrets, ospreys, harriers, and dozens of other species make their home here. The birdwatching is exceptional year-round, but particularly spectacular during spring and fall migration when thousands of shorebirds pass through. The Great Marsh is considered one of the premier birdwatching destinations on Cape Cod.
The marsh is best explored by kayak — paddling through the salt marsh creeks and channels provides an intimate experience of this remarkable ecosystem. The views from the water are spectacular, with Sandy Neck visible to the north and the historic Barnstable Village landscape to the south.
