Hyannis's Most Iconic Beach
Kalmus Beach is the most iconic and well-known beach in Hyannis — a wide, sandy stretch on Lewis Bay that has been a Cape Cod institution for generations. Named after Peter Kalm, the Swedish naturalist who visited Cape Cod in the 18th century, the beach offers something for everyone: world-class wind sports on the exposed side, calm family swimming in the protected bay, and spectacular views of Hyannis Harbor and the ferry traffic to Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard.
The beach is divided into two distinct experiences. The windward side, facing the open sound, is where you'll find windsurfers and kiteboarders launching into the consistent southwest winds that make Kalmus famous in the wind sports community. The leeward side, tucked behind the jetty, offers calm, warm, shallow water that's ideal for young children and casual swimmers.
The jetty itself is a beloved local landmark — a great place to walk, fish, and watch the parade of boats entering and leaving Hyannis Harbor. On a clear summer day, you can see the Hy-Line and Steamship Authority ferries heading to the islands, fishing charter boats returning with their catch, and sailboats tacking across the sound.

Large paid parking lot directly at the beach. Barnstable resident stickers available for discounted rates. Busy on summer weekends — arrive before 9am to guarantee a spot. Overflow parking available on nearby Ocean Street.
Hours & Season
Beach is open year-round. Lifeguards on duty Memorial Day through Labor Day, typically 9am–5pm. Concession stand and restrooms open seasonally. Parking fees apply in-season (late May through September).

Ocean Street, Hyannis, MA 02601. From Route 28, take Ocean Street south toward the harbor. The beach parking lot is at the end of Ocean Street, just past Veterans Park.
Wind Conditions
Prevailing southwest winds average 12–18 knots in summer, with frequent days of 20+ knots. Best wind sports conditions typically July–September. Wind direction and speed can be checked at the Hyannis Airport weather station.

Local Insider Tip
The west end of the beach near the jetty is significantly less crowded than the main beach area, even on the busiest summer days. Walk past the main lifeguard stand toward the jetty for more space and the best views of boats entering the harbor. Early morning (before 9am) is magical — the light on the water is stunning and you'll often have the beach nearly to yourself.
