Dowses Beach is the crown jewel of Osterville's waterfront — a wide, sandy stretch on Nantucket Sound that has been a beloved Cape Cod institution for generations. The beach faces southwest, which means it captures the full glory of Cape Cod sunsets, and the warm, calm Sound waters make it one of the finest swimming beaches on the entire Cape.
The beach draws a loyal following of Osterville residents and visitors who return year after year for its combination of excellent swimming conditions, full amenities, and that unmistakable Cape Cod atmosphere. The water at Dowses warms beautifully by July, reaching temperatures that make extended swimming sessions genuinely comfortable.
Arrive early on summer weekends — Dowses is deservedly popular and the parking lot fills quickly. Weekday mornings offer a more relaxed experience, with the beach nearly to yourself before the summer crowds arrive. The concession stand opens by mid-morning and the lifeguards are on duty from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
