Tips for Getting On & Off Cape Cod

Local knowledge for navigating the bridges and roads year-round.

Best Times to Cross

Weekday mornings before 8 AM and after 7 PM are typically the lightest. On summer weekends, aim for before 9 AM or after 8 PM to avoid peak bridge backups.

Friday Afternoon Rush

Friday afternoons from Memorial Day through Labor Day are the heaviest inbound traffic period. Expect significant delays on Route 6 approaching the Sagamore Bridge from 2–7 PM.

Sagamore vs. Bourne

The Sagamore Bridge (Route 6) handles the bulk of highway traffic. The Bourne Bridge (Route 28) is often less congested and is a good alternative when the Sagamore is backed up.

Sunday Outbound

Sunday afternoons from noon to 6 PM see the heaviest outbound traffic as summer visitors leave the Cape. If you're heading off-Cape, plan accordingly or wait until evening.

Canal Service Road

The Cape Cod Canal Service Road runs along both sides of the canal and is a useful local route for residents. It connects Sandwich to Bourne and can bypass some surface road congestion.

Route 6A Alternative

Historic Route 6A (Old King's Highway) runs parallel to Route 6 through the north side of Barnstable. It's slower but scenic, and useful when the Mid-Cape Highway is congested.
